The Most Important Attribute

Endurance is by far the most important Attribute. A Throne War isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. With Endurance you can keep flinging Powers long after your siblings run out of options, and you're making things happen while they're off resting. You're the unstoppable steamroller of Amber. Endurance means watching while everyone else dies saying "I could have saved myself if I only had another Endurance token." And laughing.

What Endurance Does

Stamina

Endurance provides the tokens used by most Powers in the game; your rank determines how many tokens you should have after completing a single rest period. Endurance is the only thing in all of Shadow that can give you Endurance Tokens, the only true resource in the Throne War.
  • At Human rank, you leave a rest period with only one Endurance token.
  • At Chaos rank, you leave a rest period with two tokens.
  • At Amber rank, you leave a rest period with five tokens.
  • Each rank above Amber grants you one further token when you leave a rest period.

Healing

How fast you heal depends on your Endurance rank-- the higher your Endurance, the more wounds you can recover in a single rest period with medical attention. Healing does not occur in parallel to Endurance token recovery. Most healing downgrades wounds to less severe ones rather than removing them entirely: a Deadly Wound downgraded one level becomes a Serious Wounds, and by another level becomes a Surface Wound. Surface Wounds simply heal.
Healing is broken into broad categories by rank:
  • Human rank Endurance heals Surface Wounds in one rest period, but requires two to downgrade anything else.
  • Chaos rank Endurance downgrades Deadly Wounds once in two rest periods, and all others in one rest period.
  • Amber or low numeric rank downgrades all wounds by one level in a single rest period.
  • Mid rank downgrades all wounds by two levels in a single rest period.
  • High Endurance rank completely heals all wounds in a single rest period.
Amberites can take consecutive healing periods, the effects of which stack. No Amberite should take more than three rest periods to fully heal. For game purposes, it is impossible to heal wounds without resting unless you have the Shape Wounds ability.

Full Rests

One can also have a combined rest period, where Healing and Endurance token recovery is done simultaneously.
  • Chaos rank Endurance downgrades all their Surface Wounds and receives one Endurance token. They requires two to downgrade anything else.
  • Amber or low numeric rank downgrades all wounds by one level in a single rest period, except for their Deadly wounds. They receive two Endurance tokens, plus one for every two ranks they are above Amber. If they do two rest periods, they get to downgrade their Deadly Wounds once.
  • Mid rank downgrades all wounds by one level in a single rest period. They receive two Endurance tokens, plus one for every two ranks they are above Amber.
  • High Endurance downgrades all wounds by two levels in a single rest period. They receive two Endurance tokens, plus one for every two ranks they are above Amber.

First Rank Endurance

  • ...can walk the Pattern five times in a row without a break.
  • ...only rests when she doesn't have anything else to do.
  • ...can heal completely in one rest period.

Healing Categories

Precisely, the number of ranks that count as "high" for healing purposes is the number of bidders divided by three, round down. The number of ranks that count as "low" is the number of bidders divided by three, round up. All remaining rungs count as "mid-ranked."
This works out to an algorithm where you start with an even split and add one low, one mid, one high, and repeat.

Optional Rule: Time and Effort

There's a pretty simple dynamic that can be used in the game: the harder you push to do something the faster and goes, and the slower you take it the easier it is.
In game terms, if it makes sense to do so you can add one delay to an action to discount the price by an Endurance, or pay an additional Endurance to subtract one delay from the required time.

Optional Rule: Pushing It

Sometimes you just need that one more Endurance token. This rules states that you can push yourself to generate one virtual Endurance token usable immediately-- in exchange for a Serious Wound. This can be done multiple times (but not in the same action), assuming you can take the hits.
